w-29 - what is it?

Hello again.. back with another question for the better-informed-than-me,

I know someone who claims a car is a '75 W-29 455ci, 442. I have seen some production numbers that says this is a rare car. What is "W-29", and how do you know your car is one?

W29 is the 442 option of our years of cars (and some other years). To be sure that the car is a W29 car, or 442 for 1975, you'll have to see the build sheet or a list of the options (from a verifiable source)

small production

O.K., so I guess the guy is probably right.

I was looking at this:

For '75 it states that there was only 212 442's made that year. I would have thought much more. If that number is right, I imagine most of those were the 350 rocket (such as what I had 20 years ago). Anyone know how many of those 212 cars were 455ci's?

O.K., I did look at them again.. The way I understand it is that the first line says "W-29"... so I'm assuming that the F37 is the 442 optional package... where the G37 is the cutlass w/o the 442 package. Interesting. At any rate, it appears Don's 442 455 could be a rare car... just because I don't think a high percentage of the 442's of that year came with a 455. I guess I'll try the olds heritage center as noted.

Nice car Don! On another note, I have not seen a '75 442 455 in a color other than red.. wonder if that was the only color available??. I've looked at more than 5 of them over the years and they have all been red.

In 1975 there were 6,227 442's made. 212, as was mentioned above, was from model F37. 6,015 were the G37. There was also 2,535 Hurst/Olds' made in 75 on the J57 platform. W29 pertains only to the 442 option. Between 1973 and 1977 the 442 production numbers breakdown as follows:

1977: 11,649
1973: 10,137
1976: 9,576
1974: 7,204
1975: 6,227

We do know that in 1973 there were just over 4,000 455 equipped 442,s. By 1976 there was only 143. 1976 was also the last year of the big block in a 442. In 1977 the largest engine in the 442 was the 403. 350 442's had that engine. For 1975, the 455 equipped 442's production numbers are most likely close to the 1976. In the mid-seventies people were moving away from the big engine cars.

In the earlier models, W29 refferred to a 455 non ram air Cutlass. For our years, it means a 442. If memory serves, the F37 model is a base line Cutlass, and the G is the better optioned Cutlass S model. Either one could get the 442 treatment. I have the 73, 74 and 75 showroom books, and they all make little note of a 442 being available.


A friend ended up getting 2 1975 442 project cars for his nephew a couple years back. The kid worked heavy on them for about a year, then forgot about them. A couple years after, my friend and I were shocked to hear he just had them hauled away rather than seeing if he could sell them. They were both small blocks, but to think they might have been a low production model, is even more sickening.

I have one of the 'T' code '75's BUT, I don't know for sure it is a real 442. It has all the Y-76 options, like the chrome sport mirror and white rag top roof. It was orginally Cranberry but then painted crimson red with painted stripes. The dealer sticker on the trunk is also on top of the new paint. What I believe happened was that the car was brought back to the dealer and they made it a 442 because the owner wanted a 442 on second thought. Here are some pictures. I have to drop the tank and get at that build sheet. The suspense is growing.
