first post and question

I am looking at a 1976 442 that is in exceptional condition. Not a full show car but very nice. It is not a numbers matching car either. Has a built 350 with a rear end geared low. Bunch of horsepower (approx 400). The car looks to have no rust. Might find some if I look real hard but I can't see any yet. Interior has what looks to be a hurst style shifter but I don't think it came that way. Will be going to look at it in the near future. Trying to work on my wife right now.
My question is what do these cars tend to sell for?
I have always liked the late 60's and early 70's muscle but this one is growing on me. Is there any particular reason you guys picked your mid to late 70's muscle?
Any advise and insite is appreciated.
Thanks
B

Welcome to the site. If the 442 is in good condition even if not totally stock, it's worth picking up. Not many are left. Rust in the rear quarters and rear bumper was a problem with these cars, and also around the quarter windows and rear window if the car had a vinyl top. Just go buy the car and be extra nice to your wife for Valentine's Day. In answer to your questions, prices of these cars are all over the place. Real nice original cars seem to sell anywhere from around $4,000 to $10,000. It's kind of a long story why I like the 73-77 GM A-Bodies, the Olds Cutlass in particular, but one of the reasons why I got my 73 442 to restore was because it's unique and there aren't many left. Usually lots of 64-72 Chevy, Ford, and Mopar iron at the shows but hardly anything 73 or later, especially Olds. It gets alot of attention at the local shows. People get a kick out of the swivel bucket seats! Usually my dad, brother, and I have the only Oldsmobiles there. One last thing, it's a little difficult to restore a 73-77 Cutlass because not much is reproduced for them. It's starting to get a little better; Fusick and some of the other Olds parts companies are starting to offer some nice repro. parts.

Good luck and if you get the 442, post pics please!

I picked mine because it's identicle to the one I had in high school. Plus they have all the stuff 64-72 guys want on their cars, a/c, power steering, power brakes, disc brakes, the list goes on, factory in most cases. They ride real good and can be made to have good horsepower as the motors are all solid platforms for a build up (minus the windowed blocks, though some have produced very well with work).

You'll love it. Welcome to the site.

They're unique, dependable, easily maintained, still within a decent price range, and have good potential to provide a long-term investment.

You will not see these cars at 99% of car shows. I bought mine (31 years ago) because I likes the looks and lines of the car. Of course 455 engine, swivel buckets with a white interior sport steering wheel and SSII's didn't hurt either. I've driven across Canada and the US three times each and never fail to get the thumbs up. Welcome to the forum.

I can see why! For some reason, I'm kinda partial to that sweet 77 in the top two pics, and that beautiful 73 in the bottom pics...

I really like the look of that 73! The 66 looks good too. Nice! Whenever I go to a show, there's only one Olds usually and that's if I drive my car to the show. There are others around, they just don't get to the show often.
