Anyone know a good, safe method to stripping undercoating without taking the frame to be sandblasted or dipped? I just need to finish getting some old undercoating off and its quite the chore to strip it. Any ideas are appreciated.

well I have used a paint scraper and a torch, heat to knife with torch and cut thru or push thru the thick part try to leave a thin layer so you do not scratch paint, then with mineral sprits and a lot of rags wiper off thin layer. it will take a little elbow grease but it will cut thru it. Then wash with tsp to cut the oil film from spirts. now paint

If yours is not real thick just try the spirts and a rag.

I have done two related projects, so I know what works. I did an entire house of victorian trim-removing oil based paint and varnish and also an rv roof covered with roofing tar. Using a good quality heat gun, warm the surface and use a stiff putty knife, brass is ideal. This will get down to a heavy film. Next, use a siphon gun to spray kerosene ( cheaper than other solvents) on the surface followed by scrubbing with a stiff bristle brush. Spray scrub rinse until clear. Finally spray and scrub with simple green to disolve and dilute the solvent and residue. Rinse with hot water and repeat as needed. If you do all this an cardboard, you can roll it up and dispose of it. Ed
