Can I just install these with out buying the "surround" thing, or do I need it also? I've got a new head unit in the glove box, so I'm not worried about ohms or anything. I'm just asking about it physically being mounted.

Also, how do you remove the package tray to get at the speaker cut outs?

If all your trying to do is replace the speakers you should be able to do that from inside the trunk. To remove the rear package tray you have to remove the rear seat.

If you are using other than the Gm units, your mounting adaptor probably won't fit. The speakers do mount from the bottom, and hopefully, you have the cutouts in it for the speakers to work through. I had to make the holes on one tray. It was really tough, and the weave material did not lay totally flat afterwards, but it had to be done. I'm a big fan of music in my cars. My '74 has the 3.5" coax in the dash, 6X9 Triax in the rear, (2) 12" woofers between the 6X9's, and about 600 watts driving them. I also have a 10 disc CD player in the trunk. Only down side to my arrangement is the spare would not fit where it was supposed to. I will probably go a similar route with my '75, but I'll guarrantee I won't be cutting any holes!

I had the wire type speaker support instead of the bracket type in my original 74 Supreme in High School. With a little tweaking that wire worked on a much larger speaker magnet. I'd like to find some of those wire supports now, because I'm not cutting holes in my package tray but I do want music in my Cutlass.

While I was down in TX this summer Macrover and I were out in the yards and came acrossed some of the wire type holders. I told Macrover to pick them up so he might be willing to sell them.

Check with him.

I will if Skylines isn't interested in them. Don't want to hijack an opportunity from him as he's interested in options on hanging speakers and such. Thank you for mentioning it.

Wow, lots of info, thanks! So is the wire thingy some kind of adapter? I'm guessing it acts as a spacer of some sort for the speaker from the underside of the package tray? I'm trying to install aftermarket 6x9's and I do have factory holes in the metal part under the tray. I'll have to go look closer at it.

Mr Rocket--thanks for the PM, that was really cool of you, but feel free to grab them. I'll probably just try and fab something up here. I'd appreciate some pictures of what you guys are talking about though if you get the chance. Might help me design something.

I was hoping this might be as simple as just screwing them in from the underside and running some wires, but I guess I should have known better :(

The wire supports just hold the speakers up without the use of screws. There are places for the wire supports to hook into that surround the speaker and hook to the other side. Easy installation if the speakers aren't to big. I bent mine when I was younger to fit larger speakers.

Well, the 6x9's are in and sound great! I just used 4 big ass metal screws on each speaker and made sure they weren't too long.
