Finally got my build sheet! And it asks as many questions as it answers. Any help on these is greatly appreciated! it's for a '77 S, by the way.

-One option is shown as "$D92: Dr Handl Tape." What's this?

-The original tires were QBW (FR78 - 15 S/B Radial Ply - W/Wall). How did these tires compare to the others available? Bottom of the line? Top of the line?

-The car lists the following lamps: U25, U26, U27, U29 (Luggage Compartment, Underhood, Glove Box and Courtesy Lamps & Map Lamps). Yet it also lists Y60 (Lamp and Convenience Group). So does Y60 include U25, U26, U27, U29? Or does Y60 denote another set of lamps (of which I don't think there are any)?

-It lists U76 (Windshield Antenna) AND UN9 (Antenna Package, Windshield). Aren't these the same things? Why list both?

-Under the column for bench seats, front floor mats, etc, it says "White Vinyl" (which is the seat color), and under that it says "26X Blue Big 4." The next line says "Bin --8J--," and under that someone handwrote "1128." At the bottom of that column, it says "EB1121 Fuel Econ CAA-CAC." Any ideas on these terms?

-At the far right, it says "Model 2DR Cutlass S Color LWR DK Blue Met White v/top," then under all that it says "XXX Customer Order." What does that last part mean?

-How do I decipher what date this car was built?

Congratts!!

I was hoping to find it for my red 77 442 when I had it re-done. But It never happened.

Here's what I can help you with right now. Don't have my books with me so I'm going from memory (that's scary!)

D92 Door Handle Tape - this is the painted adhesive tape that was put in the insert of the exterior door handles to give a painted door handle with chrome surround appearance.

The tires listed were probably towards the top of the line of tire choices being steel belted radial and white wall. Bottom of the line tires in `77 would be bias ply black walls or radial black walls. I think the Salons got a larger radial touring tire (probably a GR78) and the performance cars (442 and some with the sport suspension) could be ordered with raised white letter radials.

Y60 Convenience group includes all the lamps you mentioned. Not sure why the lamp codes are also listed individually.

I THINK U76 windshield antenna is the code for the windshield with the antenna embedded in the glass. UN9 Antenna Package Windshield should be for the antenna cable that goes from the base of the windshield at the top of the cowl to the back of the radio.

Not sure about the interior codes. I'm guessing that XXX Customer Order means the car was built specifically for someone that ordered the car through the selling dealership, and it wasn't a "generic" car (my term) for dealer stock.

Month and year of manufacture is on a sticker on the end of the driver's door. If that's gone, the cowl tag on the top passenger side will have a date code. Look on the lower left corner of the tag. It will have numbers and a letter. The numbers are the month with 01 being January and 12 being December. The letters A through E designate the week. A is 1st week, B is 2nd week, etc. Example: 06E is month of June, 5th week. This date code is when the BODY was built. Final assembly usually occurred about a week later. Perhaps sooner in `76 and `77 since the Cutlass was the top selling car in the USA. I know the Olds engine assembly plant was running 24/7 and couldn't keep up with demand. As far as an exact DAY of production for final assembly, the build sheet for my `73 442 had a date somewhere on the top left portion - 06/25 (June 25th). I don't know if build sheets for later model years were still dated.

Hope that helps ya. :D

Also, thanks a bunch for the 231 V6 article. I got it in the mail yesterday!

Congrats on finding that build sheet. As you may have heard from others, it can be quite elusive. I have some similar options on my build sheet for my 77. Check it out in the registry, I have all options listed there. Now that you mention it, mine also has the Y60 Lamp and Convenience group, and has all lamps listed individually. I don't know what to make of that. I also have the D92 door handle tape. I was hoping to have a decent pic of it on the registry or my cardomain site, but you can't really see the tape in any of them. Like Gary mentioned, there is a piece of color coded tape across the door handle to match the color of the car. My tires were QDR - Tires - GR78 - 15 S/B Radial Ply - W/Wall. I'll take a look at my build sheet later today and see what else I might be able to decipher for you.

then under all that it says "XXX Customer Order." What does that last part mean?

-How do I decipher what date this car was built?

Build date is on the upper left hand corner of the build sheet. I believe it states what shift built the car, the day and the month. The "XXX Customer Order" just means that someone went into the dealership and sat down with a salesman and specifically ordered that car as opposed to walking into the dealership and buying the car that was sitting there on the showroom floor.

Thanks dudes! This tells me a lot about the car. I also found the original envelope for the owner's manual, and it was originally sold to a lady named Faith...definitely a name that sounds like she would order a 231 V6 w/3-speed! : )

As for build date, I was thinking this car might have been built the same day my Mother arrived in America (5/19/76), since I saw a date of "5/19" written on the tire warranty. But now I realize that would have still been a '76 model. As it happens, the car was SOLD on 5/18/77... so it was close to the 1 year anniversary. Oh well. Still interesting.

Only thing I'm still confused on is "26X Blue Big 4." Is that for the compaticolor? My seats/headliner/door inserts are white, and everything else is blue (like 442Much's car).

And what of this... "EB1121 Fuel Econ CAA-CAC." Huh? Sounds fishily Canadian with all those C's. : )
