VIN oddity?

Hello,

I am looking at (yet another) '75 and have noticed that the VIN year says it's a '74. I'm pretty sure, just from looking at it, that the car is not a '74 body style, but the VIN apparently (because I haven't seen the car in person yet) says:

3G37K4M124875

If I am correct, the 6th digit is the year, right? Did some '75's list a 4 in their VIN?

The VIN you listed is for a very early 1974 Cutlass S, with a 350 4 bbl. and single exhaust. The car was made in Lansing MI. Yes, the 6th digit denotes the year. The car is a 74 and if it's got 75 sheet metal, someone put this VIN tag on a 75, or put a 75 front end and 75 taillights on a 74. Oldsmobile would not have made a 75 Cutlass with a 74 VIN. If someone switched out the VIN tag I'd stay 100 ft. away from this car because that just screams "suspicious!"

Gary is correct. At least check the title and the sellers story. Then check and see if the front end and such might have been changed. Can you post us some pics or the ad ?

O.K., I think I found the problem. I received a couple pdf scans of original paper work from the guy. One of them has the 4 and one has the 5... the rest of the VIN is the same. It appears to me that it was a misprint (hand written) on one of the docs. The original sales doc shows a 5 on the 6th digit. I'm guessing the 5 is what is on the actual car, but will verify this of course before a purchase.

Anyway, the car is definitely a tinkerers car. It's got a chevy engine and many other mods. Normally I would not lean toward a car like that, but it's purty and has about 500 hp apparently. ;-)

I'm looking at a few other cars as well.. hard decisions ahead. (can't have'em all) :-(
