Hey guys,

I have a '71 442 conv and it has the am/fm stereo with 8 track that I want to stay with, but it has one dash speaker and one rear speaker. Can I add another 10 ohm rear speaker and run a wire from the current speaker over to it and not risk any damage to my factory am/fm delco unit?
Thanks for any help on this, John

Did the factory only have one speaker in front and one in back or is the other channel burnt out?

You run risk of damaging your 8 track unit if you run another speaker in that manner. The only way you can get more speakers on that one channel is to run 4 10 ohm speakers in series/parellel. If you add another 10 ohm speaker in series that's 20 ohms, in series that's 5 ohms. Also they say not to run home speakers on a car unit that's because of the difference in ohms. Maybe a passive crossover will help some, but may not be worth it...

Wow this is really helpful. so if I bought two 4ohm speakers and connected them "In Series" would that be a safe way to go with my factory am/fm delco radio with 8 track component?

Oh and yes the factory stereo came with only one speaker in front and one in the rear behind the seat, but I think it is two channel as it is true stereo but I am not the expert at all!

No, unfortunately those won't work. It needs to be or total 10 ohms. This guy seems serious on restoration. It may be worth it to get the unit restored because it is somewhat rare. Otherwise, we'd have to get the radio specs figured out indefinitely and then go from there. I've never seen 1 front and 1 rear on an olds. I have a '66 Buick but it has an aftermarket Year One factory fit modern stereo with external 6x9's sitting on top of the rear valance panel.

Well then I guess what I am trying to do is not possible because I have never seen 5 ohm speakers that is the only way it could total 10 ohms.
