I purchased a Hurst Dual gate shifter and console from a 73 Hurst/Olds.

Was told that I needed a longer cable, so I got one from Brother's Automotive.

Went to a tranny shop and they tell me the cable is not long enough?
I measured the new cable and found its 5 inches longer than the stock console based cable ('73 Cutlass Supreme with 400 tranny).

Now the tranny shop tells me that its because the bracket is not correct.
What gives? Either there lying or do I also need to change the bracket that the cable runs through and goes to the tranny through the floor??

Noticed the Hurst shifter will bolt right up to the existing 4 bolts on the floor, but there is also another floor bracket that came with it, what is this for?

Any help would be very appreciated.

GT 73,

A Dual Gate shifter will bolt right in, but it does require a separate bracket that holds the shifter itself. I have attached a couple of photos from when I installed mine. I found an NOS cable for the Dual Gate that fit without any problems. Do you have the bracket shown in the photos?

I got mine installed with out that bracket and some spacers instead, but it was a little bit of a bitch,(console in and out 5 or 6 times) but can be done.
I'd rather have it right though, so I need one of those brackets eventually.

Brad and Tex, you guys are the best, thanks for the replies.

Brad, yes I have the bracket shown in your pic, wasn't sure where it went, but now I know thanks to your photo!

This forum rocks!!!

The d/g trans pan bracket for a t-400 trans IS different then a standard t-400 pan bracket. D/G cables are longer then standard, but you bought yours from Brothers and that in and of itself could be the problem.

W451973, I measured the cable from Brother's for the dual gate and its 5.5 inches longer than the stock cable in the car now.

If this does not work (installing on Wed. night), would the pan bracket be the problem? I wasn't aware there are 2 types of brackets?

So, how did it go ? Yes, there are two different brackets. I honestly don`t recall how much longer a 73-75 d/g cable is compared to a standard. The real difference is the distance between where it mounts on the bracket and the eyelet. Hopefully, it`ll work out for you.

W45, sorry for the delay in my response. Low and behold you were right, the bracket on the car was incorrect, however my mechanic was able to modify it to work. He did mention that ideally, the cable could have been an extra inch or two longer.

Thanks to your help, I was able to confirm these issues with him and we made it work!

I'm having difficulty with the dual gate in my car. The only adjustment is where the end where the cable mounts to the TH 400, and that doesn't seem to be einough. If I adjust it so that I can shift into Park, then there isn't enough travel in the shifter to get into 1st. If I adjust to get into first, then there isn't enough travel to shift into Park. Since I've tried 4 different dual gate shifters, I don't think that is the problem. The length of the cable shouldn't be a factor as long as it reaches, I run out of travel with the shift lever of the dual gate. I'm wondering what your mechanic did to modify the bracket on the TH400? It seems to me that the problem is the piece that connects the end of the cable to the shaft running into the trans. The cable mount may be too far away from the shaft running into the trans. Is there more than one type of mount for the end of the cable at the trans for a TH400? Anyone know the answer? I feel like I'm missing out not having 1st gear, since it sort of defeats the purpose of having a dual gate in the first place. Thanks for any help.

Pete,

Sorry for the delay, my mechanic is away until Monday, Sep. 24th.
Feel free to call him on Monday during the day 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. E.S.T.

Its best to talk to him directly, I don't know enough to explain what he had told me in order to make the H/O cable that I had purchased from Brothers Automotive work.

His name is Ed... 905-853-3777, tell him you know George with the white '73 Cutlass Supreme. He made it work for me a couple of weeks ago, Ed races Chev's (8 sec. e.t.'s) very knowledegable and friendly.
