i bought a 73 cutlass with modified parts to motor recently. when i give it gas at stop, it feels like it's gonna stall, then it kicks in quickly. the 350 motor has been rebored to max with replaced cam complete with a 850 holley car. i've been told that this carb is too big for engine. i've been told that a 650 holley would work better, but i've also read that an original rochester quad is better than any holley. What are ur thoughts and opinions? i just want my car to start and run smoothly and not neccessary burn rubber every time i take her out.

My personal opinion is to go with the rochester. The primaries are smaller than the secondaries so it would give you a bit better gas mileage. I am having a engine built for my 77 chevy truck and it has a 454 bb, pro comp heads, eldrbrock air gap intake, scat crank, nascar pistons, producing 600hp and about 730lb of torque and were putting only a 750 carb on it. Nothing wrong with holley but an 850 might be a little big for a 350.

Without a doubt,go with the q-jet,but have a reputable shop like the carb shop in cali rebuild it.I got tired of rebuilding them on my kitchen table and horible results before sending mine to the carb shop. That was money well spent.Q-jets are awesome if they are done right.Joeski

An 850 is too big. But just to make sure it is an 850, check the LIST number on the choke horn. Q-jets are great carbs when built right and can be used in most applications. Tell us a little more about whats been done to the 350 and what intake does it have ?

I faced this same choice last summer. I chose a Q jet rebuilt by holley. It was the right Q jet for my 455, and the vacuum secondaries give the engine exactly what it needs, unlike mechanical secondaries that force feed air/fuel whether in needs it or not.

Summit and Jegs have the Holley rebuilt QJs for about $250. I got mine locally for similar $ at my favorite parts store.

I guess they've gone up a few $...
