Hello All,

I have just joined this forum, wanted to say 'hi.' I am the original owner (34 years) of a black 1976 Cutlass Supreme, saddle interior. I bought the car in April 1976 at Pace Oldsmobile in New Rochelle, NY. I drove it to California when I moved to the SF Bay Area in 1979. Still have the car, all original condition, have all papers including build sheet, factory shop manual, showroom brochures, and Oldsmobile price window sticker. Everything works except the a/c does not blow cold. Drive train is excellent.

I am thinking of restoring it, but I have *lots* of rust under the vinyl roof and around the bottom of the rear window. Needs all new window and trunk gaskets, upholstery, and carpet. Dashboard is OK, but is curled up in a few spots. Restoration will be expensive.

The question I have is: should I do it? Or, leave as is and continue to drive it? Your opinions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Roger

Welcome to the site, restoring it would be awesome and then you could drive it all fixed up. Nice that you've had it for so long. I wish I had my first Cutlass back again.

Roger , welcome!

If you have the talents and time to do it yourself, by all means restore the car you have had for over a 1/3rd of your life.
If you have the $$ but not the talents, then find a good shop.
I would say you are one of a very few who have found this forum from the west coast.
The Bay Area is beautiful, and it sure as well would look a lot nicer while your Olds is driving around there~ I couldnt find one last month when I was there!! lol

Whatever you do, enjoy the car as you have had it for so long. Welcome to the site.

Welcome Roger!

Congratulations on owning your car from day one!! Very cool. You obviously care enough about the car to have held on to it this long.....AND it's in excellent running condition. I would say that if you plan on keeping it forever, fix it up. I would document the entire process with photos. What a great story you will have to tell years from now about deciding whether or not to give it a "facelift."

I love long term ownership stories. I'm sure others do too. Tell us more about your history with the car when you have time.

Welcome (another "newbie" like me)!!!

You have to hang onto the car and restore what you can when you can until you have her showroom perfect again. If you sell her, you will spend a moment every day afterwards wishing you hadn't.

Good luck.... and when you have her back just the way you want, post some pics as you cruise the PCH on the way south where you will certainly create some buzz.

I'm sure you have lots of great stories. After that many years, you kinda have to become attached to it! I'm quite attached to mine and I've had them half the time you have. Seems to me like a good reason to save it! You don't need to start a huge restoration at this stage. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to restore mine, but I can't yet. If it runs and drives, continue to run and drive it until you get the opportunity to start restoring. There's a lot you can do while still driving. Glad to see you're deciding on the most important thing, keeping another Olds on the road!

Post some pics of that thing. We like pics around here!
