Fuel gauge inaccurate

My fuel gauge seems to be off. When it reads 3/4 of a tank, it takes 11 gallons to fill. I think the tank is 22 gallons. It is a 74 442.

Is this a major repair?

I'm not positive but I think they are all like that.....? I think it has to do with the swing arm design on the float/pickup in the tank. Mine read like that too and then seem to move to empty much quicker from 1/2 to E.....
Or it could be my lead foot .....:D

My 76 was always dead one, now my 73 reads accurrate while driving or moving above 10 mph. If I am sitting it reads about 1/8 to 1/4 higher. It happened after I removed the gas tank to clean and paint. I replaced the ground and it seemed to fix it for a year or 2 while I drove more frequently. Now drive it maybe 500 miles a year or less and it gets all screwy on me.

Mine is empty when it shows about an eighth of a tank left. Was fine before I removed the tank to fix a break in the hose.
