Ok, so I'm not the brightest car repair guy out there. I was wondering if anyone would know why my fuel gauge seems to be stuck alllllllll the way to the right (full) side of my gauge, sometimes it comes and goes, but over the last year it's just been stuck. Any possible ideas as to why it would do that and how easy would it be to fix?

This is a ground problem! GM cars of the '60-'70 often have this problem. Check in the front of the tank if you see a ground wire, unscrew and clean it. If it doesn't work, you will have to remove the tank to clean the top of the fuel tank. Usualy, it solve the problem!

I agree. Sounds like a bad ground. It will make the needle peg all the way to the right, way past the full mark!
Good luck.

Hi guys,
My fuel gauge just started pegging the whole way to the right. I unscrewed the ground wire and cleaned it but it's still stuck. My question is, how do I jump the gauge? I was reading about it in my service manual on the page about "Fuel Gauge diagnosis." If someone can please give me a detailed description on how to jump it, I would really appreciate it! I'm trying to avoid dropping the tank. I filled up the tank last night to see if I could get the gauge to move with no luck. Thanks very much in advance.

Inside the trunk, behind the right reverse light, is a single wire connector. Mine is tan (77). one side goes into loom in trunk, other through grommet to outside. disconnect and ground loom side, guage should drop to E.

Yes, I did it and it worked! Thanks very much, jrsixx. My connector was also tan by the way. As soon as I ungrounded the loom side, the gauge pegged all the way to the right again. Does this means that the ground at the front of the tank is bad? What do you recommend using to clean the ground wire? I used rubbing alcohol but it didn't do anything. I really appreciate your help! Thanks again.

I'd start by taking the ground wire off of the body. Then sand the spot where it mounts till you get the metal bare, sand the wire ring too. I like to put a little dielectric grease on the spot before reinstalling wire ring. If that doesn't work, you're gonna have to pull the tank, you either have a corrosion issue where the wire connects to the fuel sender ring, or a bad sender.

Great, thanks so much for your help. Much appreciated. I'm going to give this a try tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed...
