hey, i got a 76 442, with a turbo 400, and the speedo reads way off, for example going 55 it reads roughly 85, any reason for this... what can i do to fix it?

you might look at what gearing you have in the rear end. I had the same thing from one I bought as a beater. They put a higher gear in it for towing..Hope that helps

You need the axle ratio and tire size. You put that info into a calculator and find out what drive/driven gears you need in the trans. I went to a local trans parts house with the info [axle ratio & tire size] and he hooked me up with the gears I needed for under $10.

Or you do it the hard way and get a parts ride and play transplanter

Not difficult, but it is much easier on a hoist. You have to pull the speedo housing off the trans to replace drive gear. If you can get away with just replacing the driven gear it's alot easier.

can i just go to any tranny shop and give them the tire size and rear gear ratio and they should be able to get the gear i need for the speedo?

That's what I did. I had my trans out and was going through it at the time. I got the gears from the trans parts house. He just typed in the info into a calculator and hooked me up with what I needed. Here's TCI's site, may be helpful:
