Hello there my friends, I've just completed my exhaust system upgrade on my 1977 Olds 442. However the right side header is touching the frame in a
couple of places. I've been told that replaceing the motor mounts with polyurethane type would give me the clearance I need...What are your suggestions??

What headers are you using?

I think that you may not have the right headers for a 77 cutlass, maybe they are for the g-body.I have used blackjack, hedman, and hookers in past with no probs.Check part numbers.Joe

If it is just barely touching the frame in a couple of places, new motor mounts and possibly a trans mount could get you the clearance you need if your mounts are bad. Bad mounts can let the engine settle a significant amount. I'd try that before "clearancing" the headers. My headers were so close they touched when I first started my car and when I gave it the gas, once I replaced the mounts, no problems. I don't remember 100% but I think I used Energy suspension urethane motor mounts and a good quality rubber trans mount. I've done so many on different cars it runs together in my head. Don't use Pioneer or Anchor rubber mounts that are sold at most parts stores. They don't last and tear apart in less than a year if you actually drive your car.

I had installed a double hump crossmember and new mounts for the motor and tranny. That moved the fan so much that I had to adjust the fan shroud. I did not use the poly mounts just stock type rubber.

I am having the same trouble right now with the headman headers I bought. I had to collapse the passenger side back tube over half way for the header to fit. I will now have to cut out that tube, and have it custom fit. It was hitting on the control arm bracket it was not even close to fitting.
