View Full Version : How many 73-77's do you see a year?

I Know.. another thread by me provoking a mundane thought, BUT
I was at a show a little over a week ago and
You get the obligatory " I remember when, or I had one of these and drove it into the gound until it rotted out, couldnt kill it! "..

One gentlemen from the Pontiac club made the point to come over and chat a while, talk about the other similar shared platform Pontiacs on the show field and he caught me off guard. " How many of these do you think are left? You dont see them anymore?... ".. I replied, " Well I belong to this online forum, lots of people across the country, approaching 1,000 members, there has to be at least 50,000 of these years cars floating around. They produced a ton of them."
" I dont think so, as you are watching the CARS program and all the clunkers being crushed, same thing happened back in the day, when the less fuel efficient cars of the 70's met their demise and or rusted out."
" I attend a lot of shows durring the year and I never see these years Olds around."

Got me thinking... he might be right. Now thats just one persons perception, but he "winters" in FLA, goes to shows down south half the year, spends time up in Ohio with a daughter, then up here in NewEngland with his son durring the summer. Owns a Pontiac GP, '64. Nice car.

So.... that leads me to the next poll (which anyone can post)....

I never see any on the roads in my area! Never! The only time I see one or two is at the Delaware Valley Olds shows in the spring and fall. So I enjoy the ones I have as often as I can!

Funny you should post this question today. On the way home from work yesterday, I saw, coming towards me, a very familiar face and when it went by, it was a very nice, original 76 Vista Cruiser. I just about ran off the road. I thought, where did that come from. I travel that road everyday, twice a day and have never seen that car before. Wish I could talk to them!

They are out there, CL in my state has 5-6 for sale any given week, they just aren't driven. It was fun to watch a ratty '77 4 door Supreme running around last year when gas was $4. I couldn't figure out how the poor chick driving it could afford to fill it up.

I see two in my garage every day, but on the road...never. When I do see one, I too almost run off the road!

I try getting to a car show every other weekend-mostly small ones, but almost never seen our years. Except for the Homecoming, I see maybe one a year. This year I've been lucky and seen two.:)

Within the last 3 weeks I have seen:
1. 76-77 Supreme 2 door, dark blue with a full white vinyl top, two different times in rush hour traffic.
2.Triple white 75 W-25 Hurst/Olds, very nice in Uptown.
3. 77 Supreme Brougham with 22s and fresh paint, just south of Love Field Airport about 15 times. The guy drives it everyday.
4. My 76 442 as I walk past it in the garage. Guess I need to get it out, I haven't driven it in a month.
5.* Pretty nice red 73 Malibu on Northwest Highway 2 weeks ago.
6.* Extremely nice 77 Grand Prix, original gold and creme 2 tone paint with Hurst Hatch roof panels on Northwest Highway last week.

* not a Cutlass but these cars had me looking just as much.
I probably would run off the road when I spot a Cutlass, not from surprise, from trying to get a picture. Maybe we need a thread where we can post pictures of the cars we find in the wild. I'll start one if I ever manage to get a picture of one of these wild cars or use that thread with the 73 pics that was spotted awhile back.:D

Went down Woodward tonight, man it's already happening. I seen 3 or 4 73-77 Cutlass's, several mid-year Pontiacs and one really nice '76 Regal. I'm sure there were several more, just so many cars you can only get a glimpse of what's out there.

Went to Flint Michigan Back to the Bricks Cruise last night, a mini Dream Cruise, but it's going on tonight. If you live in the area you need to go. During my cruise I observed only one other 73-77 Olds and that was a 75 442

David,

I have seen the dark blue Supreme numerous times. There is also a silver Supreme driving around town (maroon int.) and a Mandarin Orange Supreme with a tan vinyl top I see as well. For about 2 or 3 months, there is a Kroger grocery store at the corner of Forest Lane & Greenville (for you Dallas residents). Everytime I go over there I see a really nice black '75 Hurst/Olds W30. Very nice driver and looks complete. I have asked a few employees who it belongs too, but they have no idea what I am talking about...

In this part of the country, there are still a few of our years around and I seem them regularly. For the longest time there was a guy who drobe a silver '77 442 with black stripes all the time. Paint was very bad and faded, but the car looked ok. I could never track him down to ask about the car, haven't seen it in a couple of years since.

80's models Cutlass' are still everywhere in Dallas. I see tons of them all the time. Lots of folks still drive them everyday here. Just the other day I saw one and scrambled to get the camera on my phone up and going... A mid-80's Cutlass, lt. blue. The guy had at least 22" wheels on it, really "blingy", he had cut a hole in the left grill (big hole) and somehow positioned a Mercedes Benz emblem in the hole. Upon driving behind him, he had another Mercedes emblem mounted on the trunk lid. I couldn't find any Olds emblems anywhere on the car either. Must be a new Mercedes model... Unfortunately, I could not get a good enough pic.

I forgot about the 77 442 I see in Grand Prairie everytime I drive down Beltline. I haven't built a new house for so long in G.P. it may not be there anymore, I haven't seen it in a year and a half but it is silver with black and a red? interior. Hispanic girl drives it as a daily driver and wants to fix it up. It is pretty straight but needs paint and interior and is typical North Texas rust free.

With our local economy still a wreck I see more and more '70s cars on the road. About a month ago at a stoplight I saw a white w/blue top '76 Supreme with a 20ish year old girl at the wheel, looked like it came out of somebodys back yard. About 4 months ago there was a guy from out of town driveing a 74 S with a crappy paint job and a huge CB antenna screwed to the decklid pulling a small U-haul,stayed at a local motel for about a week. Ive NEVER seen a 73-77 a body car at a local car show or cruise night.

There is a body shop by me on rt. 62 in Algonquin, Illinois that always has a different '73-'77 out front in for work. Right now there is a nice restorable '79 H/O white/gold and a beautiful '76. I should stop by and see what the deal is, if they are his or if there is some guy in the area with loads of $$$ to restore all the cars I've seen. I wouldn't be supprised if there is. I live near Barrington, Illinois.

I voted that I see 10 to 20 a year. It's becoming more and more of a rarity though because Colorado (or the Denver metro area at least) is very crush-happy. The old American cars get squashed first especially when scrap steel prices are high because they weigh more. I don't even want to think about how many nearly rust free, good solid cars I've seen get scrapped over the years. The restorations would be simple. A patch panel here and there, a new paint job, freshen up the engine and other mechanicals, and clean up the interior. Sad... :(

I've only seen one other here in Kenosha, WI, and it's a beater. What is amazing about their absence is the fact that they were the largest selling car in America in 76, surpassing even Chevy. Glad to have located one!

I spotted a silver 73 442 with red stripes on a trailer heading west on 1-70 toward Topeka today. I saw many drag/custom cars westward bound today so there must be a show nearby.

I see a quite a few of the mid 70's cars around DFW, but very rare for a 76-77 442, these seem to be the rarest if you ask me. I'm still working to get my 77 back together. I just returned from yet another Iraq adventure and I'm really trying to get this thing up and running again. I can't seem to find the right parts for it around, and if they are out there people sure are proud of them and won't part with them very easily.

I see a 75 442 regularly, ( black and gold) it was for sale at one time now it's his daily driver I think. I used to see a 75 Cutlass Supreme ( silver), haven't seen it in a long time.

Spotted a nice looking 76 Cutlass 4-door this afternoon here in Cleveland, Ohio. It was on Lorain Ave. at W25th St. about 4:30. Metallin blue with a white vinyl top and regular Ohio plates! (not historic) So it's a daily driver. I didn't have a camera so all I could do was tap my horn and give the driver a thumbs up as he drove past me. He must have thought I was some wacko!

On Saturday 2/6/10 I saw a 76-77 Supreme/ Salon. White with a black landau top and a VFN hood that was striped in black. Car had bigger 17 or 18 inch wheels and passed me the other direction while I was waiting to turn under a freeway overpass. He passed quickly and the concrete pillars blocked alot of the view. By the time the light changed and I could have turned around to attempt to get a picture he was 5 minutes ahead and GONE. Gray haired dude in his 50s driving and the car was very nice, what little I could see of it.:( I'll keep looking and get a picture of one eventually.:o

I did and last night (2/13/10) I saw a 76-77 Y-76 edition driving on Central Expressway. White car with the chrome mirrors. I couldn't make out the letters on the fender under the Cutlass emblem, maybe BMO  but not sure. The car had brand new big giant wheels (22's maybe?) and tires. The paper labels weren't even worn off the tire tread yet. The car was pretty nice otherwise, small rusty chip on front driver's fender lip. Couldn't see much else. There was a young black guy driving and he was really moving, it was hard to catch up enough to get a couple of phone pictures without killing somebody. Now I have to figure out how to get them from the phone to the computer. I tried to send them to my e mail with no luck. Any ideas? Stay tuned for the pics.

Hey Dave, found out my phone has a spot by the battery for a mini sd card, works great. You may check into it.

Firethorne77

David ,

Usually you can put them on a mini sd card with the cell phone if equipped. Then down load them through a USB reader on to the computer.

Otherwise, I have just emailed my phone pics, but sounds like you had trouble, so they may not be a typical file .jpeg from your phone.

You can always send them to someone elses phone and have them try to email them to your home email address that way.. heck i'd do it.

Let me know. I give you my cell number and you can bounce them up to me and I will send them to email and see how I can get them up and back to you.

Took 3 or 4 pics and used the better half's phone, when she gets home I'll check it out if she will let me. It's a pretty new and expensive phone and I don't want to get in trouble if I start "working on it". I know I wouldn't hurt it pulling the battery cover but it's not mine, so I'll see. Otherwise I'll send you a PM Pete. Thanks guys.

Passed by a 4-door blue 77 this afternoon. Historical plates, looked in great shape, no serious rust, a silver haired lady behind the wheel. Unfortunately by the time I grabbed my cell to take a picture she was by me and gone. Thates 2 4-doors in 2 weeks !!!! and on salty streets in a snowy Ohio winter.... OUCH !!

I saw a 75 supreme/salon near Alegan Mi. over the weekend, parked in some ones yard. that 75 color similar to mine. (percimmon??) Looked super clean. SSIII's, white letters, vinyl top. Was funny, cause it had a skin tight cover on it, thats how I could see the grills and vinyl top. Reminded me of a chick on a cold day. lol.
