Yesterday I was thrown into a pissing match about 4 bangers. VW's to be specific. I have never really been impressed by too many of them. This friend of my brothers has a GTI hatchback with an originally NON turbo 1.8L engine. He placed a turbo on this car and is running, no BS, 25 lbs of boost on it. They threw me in the car and took a few runs with it down some long straight roads not too far away. Not too fast off the line, but once you hit about 4000 rpm, the turbo spools up and you go from 4000 to 8000 rpm in about 1 sec and 40 mph to about 110 mph in about four seconds. It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen and would not have believed it had I not been in the car. This thing dynoed at 330 hp at the front wheels. (talk about torque steer) I would have thought the boost levels alone would have grenaded the block. Have any of you guys heard of this? Apparently, it is important to start with a NON turbo engine then put a turbo on it. Not sure why, but man does this little roller skate go. Easily the fastest car I have been in with an engine this small.

A friend of mine has a 93 Sentra SE-R with a japanese Pulsar engine (factory turbo). Normally they put out 240 to the wheels..

His puts out 550 ;-)

Since the power is so high up, it actually doesn't launch bad. he's shooting for low 11s this year.

The Subaru WRX's are popular at the local track here (Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, CO). Depending on what's been done to them, they are turning low 12's to low 14's. Take a full second off those times and that's what they'd be running at sea level. They're quick. I don't know for sure if those cars have 4-bangers in 'em or not. There's just something that doesn't look right to me when a car does a nice smokey burnout with the FRONT tires! :p

The WRX was 227 HP, the STi version was 300 HP (2.5L boxer 4). They're pretty quick from what I've seen. Like DONUTRUN, there's something to be said for a 4 door running times like that!
I'm going to try to see what kind of specifics that VW has, beyond the stock internal motor. This thing hasn't even had the valve cover off. I have no idea how it holds together. I need to get some quarter times for it. I think he ran mid 12s with the previous turbo. This is just stupid! 25 psi of boost, in a car we can fit in our trunks!
Anybody remember what the Buick GNs ran? 6 psi?

The Neon SRT4's aren't nothing too sneeze at. For the dough, they're pretty quick from the factory.
