Last year when I was having dash problems, I cooked the sending unit in the tank. I found the dash ground problem, so Know everything works, and tested the gas guage by disconnecting the harness plug in the trunk and grounding it, and the guage responded.

So, the sender is gone.

1. where can I get another, and/or is there a compatible replacement?

2. is there any way to cut a hole in the trunk to get to the sender, or do I have to lower and drain the tank? I don't mind cutting, and will make a very nice and removeable access cover. If I can cut a hole, anybody know the colcation to cut and how big a hole?

Thanks!

Dan its a very simple job to drop the tank and service the tank unit. You basically need to remove the escuchion at the tank neck and jack the rear of the car up because your going to need clearance at the rear to tilt the tank out. Support the tank and remove the straps then lower and disconnect the 3 tank lines. There is a ring on the top that will need to be basically unscrewed to remove the unit from there. You better get that Whale ready its almost HO day!

Joe,

Thanks for that part of the answer, but...

What am I going to put into the tank?

I priced one at the parts house just a few months ago, they should be an available replacement part.

It's still available from an auto parts store? I called a few specialty vendors, and they had nothing after 1972.

Rockauto.com shows two, one for a car with a/c, $57 and one with out, $62.

Check GM parts direct, I'd bet they show one available for your car too.

Drop the tank, you don't want to cut a hole in your trunk pan.
