I have a radio-delete bezel I want to install, and at the same time put a CD player/radio in the glove box. Any suggestions? I'd like something that plays mp3s, is relatively inexpensive, and doesn't look like some ricer's blackberry with 800 flashing lights. Suggestions?
By the way, I'm doing this because I only have an AM/FM mono radio, and the AM doesn't work, and I'd like to replace the speakers, too (but with more modern, 8 ohm units instead of our factory 10ohm units).

Hello,
You have several options, Check out customautosound.com or soundmove.com.You could go with secret audio system and keep your original system intact or you could put a new stereo in that looks like the original radio. They also carry replacement speakers? You can also add mp3 player to their system.
That's what I'm going to do with my car.

Good lord! I'm reading the link and thinking "wow, this guy thinks just like me," till I realized IT WAS AN OLD POST BY ME! : ) Oops. Anyhow, I've changed gears a bit and now want to do the radio delete+CD instead of a '78 cassette/FM deck. Although oldwarrior is now tempting me toward a 455 instead...

I've got my Delco 8-track in place and an AM-FM MP3 player in the glove box. The front speakers are 4" Blauplunct (sp) and in the back 6 x 9 Jensen tri-axles, mounted as the factory intended.

Reviews on the customsound retro units are BAD I would recommend staying away from them. From what i've read the price to quality gap is huge.

Im doing the same in a way, my 77 cutlass had a kid who had put in a stereo. They wanted $2,000 which now sounds insane after what I am having to do to it(Exhaust manifold leak, low tranny fluid/slightly singed and brown, and a rusted out leaking gas tank) He took $1,500 without a stereo, which didn't hurt my feelings because I really prefer to do my own audio stuff.
Ill be putting this in this week:
Kicker 08ZX1502 2X75-Watt Stereo Amplifier($92 amazon)
Kicker 08KS6930 KS-Series 3-way 6X9s ($75 amazon)
Recoton ACW339 Audio "Y" Cable, 1/8" Mini to 2 RCA Male Connector ($3)
My little mp3 player- any will do
(This is a no head unit system, but one can be added)
I will be slapping in the 6X9s in the rear dash, which is just thin metal for now. I will probably being doing dynamat down the road for noise and vibration.
That amp can be used for subs or speakers, with a crossover switchable from high or low, with signal sense auto on, and switchable input sensitivity high/low. If you hide the amp underneath the seat, there will be no visible stereo, you could also presumably run the 1/8"(Standard headphone) cable to anywhere you want.
Im more of a home theater audio guy, and headunits always disappoint because at moderately high volumes they crap out and add a ton of THD. A sturdy powerful amplifier will sound better at all volumes due to decreased THD, and high volume will still sound very crisp and clean.
If I end up adding a head unit later, I will keep the 6x9s amped. And Ill replace the 3.5" speakers that came stock with the car.
For adding a headunit:
Heres what I would recommend(what id be getting):Infinity Reference 3022cf 3.5-Inch Two-Way Loudspeaker (Silver/Black) $50 amazon. They are 2ohm which means power would not be lost to resistance, and at 91db sensitivity they will get loud off of little power, AND by only having 2 speakers powered by the headunit, you would open up headroom and allow these to be driven very cleanly. (Make sure your headunit is 2ohm compatible.) Or possibly Infinity 329CF 3-1/2 -Inch Custom Fit Two-Way Speakers.
For a subless system, this could get very loud, but more importantly should sound very good at nearly any volume.
