I will be selling my Mandarin Orange & white 77-442, I found a 10k orig 73 H/O in Vancouver Canada that I'm going to buy, but I can't keep both because of lack of garage space! My 77 is a 33k orig car that is a time capsule. Here is a link with some pictures.

Just to chime in on this thread, that car is awesome. It belonged to one of our local Olds club members here in Nashville after it left Florida. I have drooled all over that car for years. It is just unreal how good it looks in person. I think it left Nashville for its current home. Hope someone here on the forum gets that car, it must be preserved!

I too drooled over the car at the SE Regional show in Tenn. My wife and I just loved the car. I have wanted that car from that day. I have kicked myself for selling the Firethorn 77 5 speed car but needed the money to get a 71 W-30 conv car that I had also been chasing. Now it ain't gonna happen to me again!!!!:cool:

I really hope to see that car in person someday soon. From all of the photos and things I have seen, it looks fantastic! Would love to have it parked by my '77 at a show!

John, I have corresponded with the new owners of the red '77 5-speed. It finally went to a good home after the dealership (or wholesaler) who had it. A family has it and sounds like they are really happy with the car.

I'm glad it will be going to a good home to someone who really appreciates it! The key words in your post are My wife and I just loved the car. :D :p I hope one of these days I'll be able to say that! :p The car is just awesome! That mandarin orange color is too cool!

Does anyone know if this car was at Olds' 100th birthday in Lansing in 1997? I remember a gorgeous mandarin orange 77 442 on display but I'm not sure if it was this car. I think my brother took a picture of it. I'll have to check out the photos he took back then.

Brad, I was curious what happened to the red 77 442 5-speed. We all know it had a few appearances on ebay. What state did it finally end up in? Are the new owners members of the OCA or just classic/muscle car enthusiasts? I hope it shows up at an OCA Nationals someday. I'd like to check the car out. From the pics I've seen of it, it looks fantastic too!

Nope, different car. I remember that one too. Difference was instead of orange with white stripes & interior, it was orange & buckskin. Weird color combo, but looked good. Really weird car with bench seat, plain jane outer mirror and column shift. I have pictures of that car too, I need to dig them out and post them.

That's right.. It was orange and buckskin. I mainly remembered the wild orange color. My brain must be going to mush because of all the engineering problems I've cranked out over the years... see kids, look what happens when you stay in school... :D :p Just kidding of course!

It would be cool if you could find pics of that other car and post them. I think people would enjoy seeing that car too because it's so unique.

Brad the 5 speed car is owned by a young man who actually showed the car but the Judge did not believe Olds made the car in a 5 speed. He has the documentation from Olds. I have been contacted by the new owner thru this board so I believe he is a new member. It is a very nice and correct car and I would like to have it back but don't think he is going to part with it for awhile.

Brad, I have a couple of pics of that car and as I recall it was a bucket seat car with a column shift. I spoke to the owners, the original owners and they said they ordered it that way so their kids could go from the front to the back seats. Or something like that. I just remember it because my wife and I l0ved the color combo. If I had a way to scan the pics I would. In fact I'm looking at the pics right now. Wish I took some of the interior. Also found pics of Ken's 76 442.

Here is a picture of it. I posted it in the "Shows & Cruises" forum. It was a bucket seat car, no console with a column shift. Plain black seat belts (no compacti-color) with a plain jane outside mirror only on driver's side. Pretty interesting car. I believe the license plate was from Wisconsin...

I can honestly say that car with its Mandarin/White paint scheme is most likely one of my favorite's when you stop and think from a period of time in America that brought us Avacado and Harvest Gold in every household!!::p

But seriously.. I dont think there woud be a member here who wouldnt want that car in their garage!

Speaking of odd factory colors... I know there are a few members here who have that electric green metalic factory color.
Has anyone seen a 442 factory with that green before? I never have. Always seen that rare green on an S, Supreme or Sedan.

When I was 16, I saw one of the Electric Green or Lime Green 442's on a lot. It was a 76 with white interior and looked nice. But at that time it was way out of my budget so I had to pass...

I have never seen another one since then.

Here is a picture of one of that color combo, but not great condition.

Now that gets me thinking that maybe somewhere there is information on production figures with paint codes for our 73-77 cars? Probably a pipe dream...lol

True, Lime isn't listed for '77. Perhap Medium Green in '77 is the same as Lime. I'm not sure. The reason it looks like a '77 to me is because of the bucket seats. They don't look like '76 seats. The swivel buckets in a '76 442 will not be so square at the top.

My 1976

Brad's 1977

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/vttedrm/bradlen-1.jpg

Also, in '76 Ebony Black is listed as a colour choice, however in '77 it's just called Black. Maybe they did the same thing in '77, Lime became Medium Green (as opposed to Dark Green) and Ebony Black became Black.

The Cutlass S in 1976, had only one choice for buckets, the swivel buckets. The bench seats choices were split or not. So, I'm thinking unless the car has buckets (A51) from the 1976 Cutlass Supreme Brougham, it's probably a '77. Anyway, that's my logic, I could be wrong.

ragz442
02-09-2009, 07:00 PM
Ken, my '76 S has strato buckets from the factory. I actually thought it originally came with swivels, because the pamphlet from the Olds History Center the previous owner gave me with the car stated A51 was Swivels?? I do have a set of swivels I plan on installing though.

That's interesting. My 76 Sales Handbook offers the bench seat, a split bench or the swivel buckets for the Cutlass S. There is no mention of other buckets for the Cutlass S. That just goes to show you, you can't believe everything you read :o

Sorry for going off topic. So as our new member above asks....how much?

Another very striking color combo in 77 was Medium Green/White. Back in the day when these cars were new, there was a guy here in Nashville that I used to see all the time driving down the street. He had a 77 442 in Medium Green with a White vinyl top, White stripes, White interior with the Compaticolor Medium Green carpet, dash etc and I think the car had a 403. It was just stunning! After a few years, it dropped out of sight and I have never seen it again. Always wondered where it went and what happened to it. While he owned it, the car was always spotless.

That makes two of us John who couldnt find Firethorn mats ! I had my original set up until '98 or so , then they just got brittle and faded. Always looking though for a new set.

That is what I am told . I sent the check for the mats yesterday. There was a Pontiac supplier that indicated they were going to do red and blue mats but I called and emailed them for over six months regularly and never got anything but promises. I finally gave up. I wanted the red ones for my Firethorn car with white interior and red carpet.

Trans Am Depot sells a set of "Carmine Red" floor mats. They look pretty close in color to Firethorn (I think). Click on the link and scroll down a little:

I purchased the Camel Tan mats for my car and they matched pretty darn close to the originals.

Its not like my car is a points challenger at the shows, far from it!! LOL
Dont think the mats will make or break a showing, but would be nice to have them to look original.

I just enjoy having her restored well enough to my tastes!

How about some details on that 73 HO in Vancouver B.C. that you are chasing.

White or black?
U code or V code?
original owner?

not expecting you to give up its' location or the current owner just some details on what sounds like an awesome score.

Thanks I got my N.C. license plate for it yesterday. " 77 442" I hope the economy turns around by the end of 09 or I am going to have to reduce the number of cars I own. Sold my street rod to buy this car. The muscle car market is way off but probably where it should be and not the boom years of 06 07. May never see it like that again in my lifetime . Car people are still out there. Went to the Run to the Sun in Myrtle Beach yesterday and they could not park all the show cars. Great weather and cars. One 73 Cutlass painted Black with Gold stripes . Nice , pretty car.

The economy will turn around. 4 of our major banks have just told the feds that they don't need the $125 billion offered to them. They say that they have all made profits with the lowest profit being $600 million and that people are still paying motgages and loans. That's the best outlook as our banks rated number 1 internationally. It depends on how it goes with the US however, as we trade $1 million a minute back and forth. We're on the rise so we feel that you will be too, soon. :)
