Oil filler tube wont help. First look at the number cast into the block above the water pump. Then try to see what letter is cast into the heads. And if you feel like getting under the car, on the drivers side towards the front there is a smooth"pad" into which they stamped the sequential portion of the VIN. If that matches the VIN you should be able to get the engine code from the VIN.
Good Luck

RocketMan has some good info for ya, also a couple quick checks are:
If your trying to determine if the car was an original bb car, the 5th # in the vin should be a T. If you've already established that, and you are trying to verify it has a big block, it would have a letter on the corner of the cylinder heads [should be a J if original]. A BB will measure about 14" between cylinder heads at front of intake, whereas a SB will be about 12".
Edit: sounds like you already new that, trying to authentcate #'s matching......sorry.

And if all that doesn't do it for ya, see if the tranny is a Turbo 400. Only the 455 cars had the TH400 ;) :D The number you got off the filler tube does indicate the engine as a 1976 engine however.

Hey Ken,
How did you decode that filler tube # ? I didnt think those #'s were traceable. Is there a date code on there?

The number on the oil fill tube is just an engine unit number. It does tell you however that in your case, it is a 1976 engine. The first digit denotes the year (6 = 1976). Looks like you found the partial VIN stamped on the block pad, so I won't waste extra key strokes telling you where it is! :D
