How did the emblem on the outer sail panels of the 75 H/O mount? I see three holes surrounded by the ghost of a H/O emblem but all I can find are self adhesive repops. If this is all that is available how do these mount on the vinyl tops and give the recessed appearance? In case you are wondering my Olds was the victim of either a poor attempt at a restoration or the target of a mad E-bayer in that the exterior emblems were all scavanged. They tried to get the sport wheel (don't come off to easy with a screwdriver!) but failed and amazingly the dual gate shifter was laying in the passenger floorboard ??? and the previous mentioned sail panels and emblems were not taken. thanks

Tony

The originals were metal and had 3 pins on them as you may have guessed. I haven't seen anyone making them with the pins. Just the flat plastic ones that use tape. If you put on a new top you could put short screws with flat washers on them, using the 3 original holes, to hold the padded top in kind of indented like the original emblem did and then stick one of those repops on over the screw heads-washers with the tape. You could also make a small H/O size cut out in the padding from the back, before the new top gets glued down to help with the embedded look for the emblem. I think you may have to improvise but can get a good result. Good luck.

Is this adhesive strong enough to hold tight to the vinyl? I believe it is a 3M product.

The 2 sided tape adhesive? I think that is what is on back of the flat emblems. If the vinyl is clean it should hold, factory uses it for all kinds of emblems. Of course I have been seeing a bunch of Dodge trucks with the letters falling of the tailgate leaving pieces of the tape behind. Saw one today that just said Dodg_ and the next door neigbor's truck door says D_dge So who knows maybe it won't hold. I'd install them on a nice warm day.

I parted out an original untouched '74 H/O ( it was junk), and heres what I found. The outside emblems were plastic. There is a slightly smaller piece of steel with the exact outline - or ghost - of the emblem, this piece was riveted to a filler piece that made the window smaller. Padding for the vinyl top is removed from the area where these are riveted together. This gives the recessed look. The plastic emblem is then put in place over the steel one with 2 sided adhesive. The holes you see are from the rivets

That sound exactly like how mine were installed on my '76 I recently disassembled. I coulda swore the emblems are metal though?

I sure thought the exterior emblems on my 74 were metal too.

I attempted to peel them off a rotting 75 H/O I found years ago and they were like a chromed and painted plastic. These had no paint, and the chrome finish was peeling, leaving only white plastic. One broke, the other came off intact. I wished I knew where that car ended up. It seemed like two weeks after I found it, it was towed away.

Over the weekend I took a look at a '74 H/O that I have for parts. I believe this one is all original too, the emblems are plastic. I dont think I have ever seen metal H/O emblems for these cars. Has anyone ever seen metal emblems?

I got em boxed up and tucked away now, maybe the emblems were plastic. I'm pretty sure the backer piece was some sort of pot metal though [as you've already stated].
