Have you ever seen a 77 toronado with factory t-tops? I just purchased this car from the original owner after it had sat for the last 6 years or so. I did all the draining of fluids and rebuilt the carb, replaced the tires, tuned it up and now the thing runs like a top. If you have any info about toronados with t-tops please let me know, I cant find anything at all except for an article about a toronado with the hot wire bent glass and power operated t-tops, but it never made it to production. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dennis

Hi Dennis,

You have an XSR. This 1977 Toronado (Model W-57) had a production number of 2,714. It's quite rare. This was also the last year for Toronado's built in Lansing. Another feature included a panoramic rear window. The car was 4,781 lbs and base price was $10,683. It had its own exclusive assembly line in Lansing. This was the first Oldsmobile that had a base sticker price of $10,000 or more. Hope this helps and welcome.

Ken

I'd love to see some pics if you can. I thought the 77 XSR was a prototype. It was supposed to be crushed, but ASC bought it from Olds because of the money they had invested in the power T tops. It changed hands a few times, and last I knew, it was in the process of being restored. Are the T tops power or lift off? I've seen Toro's with the moonroof, but never any with T tops. Good luck and welcome

This must not have been a prototype, there is a ad for sale on ebay with the same car.

This car has lift off t-tops and the rear window is not the wrap around. I have seen a couple toronados with the wrap around rear window but they both had a sunroof. I have pictures of this car from back in early 78 when the original owner purchased it and it had the t-tops from the beginning. He said the car had 12 miles on it when he picked it up. It still has the original bags that the tops go into when in the trunk. He bought the car in colorado and he brought it here to phoenix in 1988. It had been sitting in a storage lot for about six years until I bought it and got it goin again here recently. I havent been able to find any real info about this thing and im kinda curious about how many were produced and what options they had. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

This was where I found some info. That's why I thought the XSR was a prototype.

I know I'm not too proud to admit I am out of my league when it comes to Toro's.

The info I got was out of Dennis Casteele's book "The Cars of Oldsmobile". If it's wrong, then I don't know what to think of this. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/vttedrm/willy_nilly.gif

I'de have to say considering how old this guys posts are and he only had 3, he was probably a hit and run member. Not to mention he says he was selling it. Most likely just came by here using the board as a free outlet to advertise his car for sale. Probably hasn't been around since.

Hello Bill. If the guy had the Power T Top XSR, he would know it and would have stated the tops were power. Nobody would forget that. I saw a 78 Toronado coupe, not and XS with the Hurst Hatch roof at a car show once. I also saw a 77 Eldorado with the same tops. They were installed on many cars of that era. It's a very long shot that you are going to find an XSR. Why such interest?

Yeah, I think it's safe to say that guy hasn't been around for a while. That's the toughest part about resurrecting old threads. But hey, I guess ya never know...

Still would have been cool to see that t-top setup!!
