Just wondering how many miles some of you guys have gotten or seen on a 73-77 350 Olds? I got my 73-76 350 out of a junkyard under the hood of a rusted out, green, black, brown and white 81 Monte Carlo that was smashed all to hell. I have no idea on the history of it other than the Monte it was in had tons of used oil filters in the trunk and there was no sludge in the engine, so someone obviously was diligent about oil changes. All I did was regasket the engine and replacing the timing set (which still had the nylon gears which were only slightly stress cracked, with some slop in the chain). Appeared as though the engine was never rebuilt.

The oil pressure seems a little low when hot, although I don't know how accurate my gauge is. Shows between 35 and 40psi at cruising speed and around 10 at idle in gear at 600rpm. It uses absolutely no oil though and doesn't make any noise that I can hear other than the Carter fuel pump knocks a bit.

Anyways I'd like to hear some of your guys experiences with these engines.

I know a guy from work who had a 1976 Cutlass Supreme a few years back. His car had 300,000 miles on it when he sold it. The car was rusting out from under him. I saw him drive it to and from work for years. He said it was the best engine he ever had...it was a 350.

I'm only at 145K with my 77 and the farthest it's been apart is timing chain and valve cover gaskets. 300K is definitely something to shoot for though!!

I had 196k on my 74' Hurst Olds and it still ran strong. By far the best Olds I have owned to date. All I did was a timing chain swap even though it ran fine I put one in to get the car tuned and timed properly. I put a Cloyes double roller in there replacing the factory plastic sprocket which was cracking everywhere.

I know a guy in my hometown who has one of the 78(I think it is a 78) Pace car ,Not a cutlass it is like the 88. Anyway it has 266K on it and the only thing ever done was oil changes and tune ups. It still runs like a raped rabbit. No noises or anything and still gets about 17mpg. It was a beautiful car when he bought it new and now it is getting really ragged. He takes good care mechanically but other wise he not so hot at it.
