View Full Version : Need opera window trim

77 Cutlass Supreme
05-26-2007, 01:18 AM
My first post and I'm happy I came across this site. Just bought a very nice 77 Cutlass supreme on ebay and I'm looking for the trim that goes around the opera windows. I'm pretty sure its the same from 73-77 but I've been told they are very hard to find. If anyone has any info or any good links that would be great.

Steve, welcome to the site. It's good to have someone from my hometown here - what are the odds? On my 442, I used the trim from a 1973 with a vinyl roof. It's not the plastic, it's stainless steel. I got both sides for $1 about 20 years ago and they're still perfect. Stainless is the way to go. If I still have a set, they would be for my rood style and would notfit the smaller opera windows of the Supreme. I'll keep an eye out.

Ken, your lucky you got all your parts about 20 years ago, these go for well over $200 now. You see them on ebay alot, but they are not cheap. The bigger 'S' style stainless ones bring even more money. There's no difference between vinyl or no vinyl top. But be careful, the Grand Prix and Monte's are similar, but will not fit.

I just obtained these :EBay auction Item number: 250118439311
It would be great to have someone here confirm if they will work for my 74 cutlass... They state they are from a 73, and that they are metal, so i think I may be ok...

Thanks,

I copy/pasted that item # and they look like the correct ones. He states they came off a 73 Cutlass but had Monte listed in the description also? They look similar in a pic, but the Monte/GP are a little bigger I believe. Maybe the Monte Carlo's are the same, but I'm pretty sure the Grand Prix's are different. It looks like you got the right trim to me.

Congrats. They look good. I believe the 73's were the only years they were steel so you got the best.

Steve, I don't have a set for a supreme style roof - sorry. If I see anything and you're still in need, I'll let you know.

Welcome to the group. The stainless qtr. window trim that's being discussed was on early to mid year 1973's. Olds switched to the chrome plated plastic junk (probably as a money saving move) on the late `73 cars. My guess is the other makes did too (Chevy, Pontiac, etc.) The stainless qtr. window trim from a `73 Supreme will fit all Supremes through 1977. I've seen this trim go for over $200 on ebay. The larger Cutlass S trim usually sells for around $300. It's stainless, but priced like gold! :D

Have fun with your Olds!

Thanks for the tip. He answered back that he still has them but has moved recently so he needs a few days to find them. Don't know how much he'll want for them but if the going price is around $200 that's scary.

I have a few more questions for you guys, does this trim piece fit snug when it goes on or is there some play in it cause my vinyl roof is bubbling a bit right where the opera window is but I'm hoping the trim will go on and hide that for now until I'm ready to tackle that job. Will try to post a pic of it.

The mouldings had a sealant around them which is similar to 3-M Strip Caulk.
This is a pliable caulk that is black in color and comes in strips, you can buy it at your local body shop supply house. It does not set up permanently so you can remove them if necessary. Some people use urethane window sealant but it is next to impossible to remove once it sets up. You can clean up the excess strip caulk with wax and grease remover.

I have a 76 Cutlass "S" with the garbage foil trim. I am gonna order some new stuff if i can find it. I noticed you said the Cutlass "S" trim is larger so im guessing trim from the supremes would not be good for me??????

The Cutlass S and 442 have the large quarter windows were the Supreme had the small opera window. The buick Regal had the same window as the Cutlass Supreme. You might give West Coast Sheetmetal a call, there phone# is 408-286-6537 as they have many 73-77 A body cars and parts in stock

The trim pieces for the "S" and the 442 are hard to find. Plastic or stainless. I paid a little over $250 for a nice set of stainless for my 442 on Ebay but had been looking for over 3 years and finally bit the bullet. I recently saw an NOS set of the plastic stuff sell for a little over $250 on Ebay. That seems insane.
I have another mangled set of stainless that I got for a couple of bucks from the wrecking yard, one side both pieces are good but a little mis-shapen and the other side one of the pieces is broken in half. The broken piece was thrown in side the car.(the pik-a-part wrecking yards here clean up every few days by stuffing every car part and foreign object but not turds,(please see next rant) laying on the ground back in the car which sucks cause then I have to throw it back out all over the place to see what's inside:mad: I am sure they love that)(and on the other rant, what is the deal with people taking a dump in the junkyard? Everytime I go I see numerous piles! in vans, on the ground, by the fence. Use the damn port-o-let ya nasty mofos! Does this happen in the yards where you guys live?) Somebody sure ruined a high dollar part by not using some patience pulling it and then just threw it down and left it on the roof of the car. I would consider selling these, 3 of the 4 parts are whole and usable with a little careful straightening. I will have to dig around and find them.
I found a set of the smaller opera window stainless trim at the same yard on a 73 Monte Carlo and pulled them for my 76 Monte, price $2 and the double hump dual exhaust crossmember for my 76 442, price $15. That was a good day.
I have seen the smaller window trim in the yards from time to time and seen it mangled nearly the same way. I think if you look enough you can find the smaller window trim with some effort as long as some hamhanded butcher hasn't gotten there first. I think it is worth searching for considering what it brings these days when someone knows what they have.
I'd always use the stainless unless you want to be absolutely factory correct. The plastic just doesn't last.
