Hey guys, I am planning on going to the Woodward Dream Cruise and I am looking for some advice. I had a hotel reservation in Hazel Park and I was told to get out for my safety and book up in Madison Hts. Is that a good idea to keep my car and me safe?
Also, is anyone going that knows were a good place to park and enjoy the day would be. I contacted the MotorCity Rockets to see if they have a place but have not heard yet.
Any help would be great since this is my first time to this event.

What did I miss with this post? Are these cars that went to the Woodward Dream Cruise and got tired going up and down the 17 mile:D
Great thing about Oldsmobiles is that does not happen to them. They keep going forever. GM missed that memo!

Think you have the right idea in contacting the local club, get the locals advice. Went to Memphis years ago and really ended up on the wrong side of Memphis. The local Police even told us "No one walks at night" when we attempted to walk three blocks to a resturant. Hopefully you can find what you are looking for.

Hazel Park is not terrible, now Highland Park on the other hand.........I hang in Pontiac, it's the northern-most town on the cruise route. Pontiac has it's problems, but they do a good job for the cruise. Most seem to congregate in the Royal Oak area, supposibly the "epicenter" but it's happening anywhere up and down the Ave.

I would try to stay around this area, it is Madison heights and very close to Woodward and freeways, Also plenty of restaurants around.

Pick a hotel around this location.
Best bet is to come in early so you can go out on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
By Thursday you cannot drive around on Woodward at night and for Friday and Saturday forget trying to go near 11 mile rd to 14 mile roads.
If you come in early the place to be is between 13-14 mile roads.
I recommend hooking up with Todd on sat if you want to be able to breath he has a good set up.

Thanks Dave for you comments. I did rebook my reservations at the econolodge. The bad part is that I will not be able to get there until Friday night and only have Sat all day to enjoy the cruise. I hope I can hook up with someone who might be able to show me a good place to park. It is also fun to cruise with other Olds owners.
Thanks

its too bad your not getting there until Friday night. Try to get there around supper time on the Friday so you can at least do some cruising cause Saturday is mostly one big traffic jam.

That's what I hear, so I would like to meet up with some locals and park with them. This is a once in a lifetime event for me and my Cutlass but it is something I have always wanted to see.

Stopped in Satch's tonight, they're having a party Saturday like usual. At the very top of the "loop" in Pontiac. They cook out and have plenty of beverages....ie kegs [and pop, juice also]. They're supposed to have a DJ this year too. The city of Pontiac started making us pay to park last year [$8.00], but if you want your more then welcome to stop by.

Thanks Sledhead2, the only car that is restored at this time is my 71 Cutlass Supreme. So that will be the one I will be taking.
Thanks for the info Ragz442. We may look into doing that. I would like to meet up with some Olds folks if possible.

Kevin,
Hi, my name is Dave Tucker and I am with the Motor City Rockets. We are hosting the 2008 Olds Nationals in Dearborn and also will have a large place to park on Woodward.
Are you an OCA member?
If you are interested in parking with our club, let me know and I can make arrangements for you. Our spot in located just south of Long Lake Rd. on the East Side of Woodward in the Charter One Bank Parking Lot. We have the entire site for our club and guests.
Charter One Bank
3510 Woodward Avenue
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
Anyway, enjoy the trip out. Like the other post suggested. You really do need to make it here early enough on Friday night to enjoy the drive for the entire 16 miles. Sat is unreal and driving it is almost impossible after Noon.
Best of luck.

Hey Dave T, welcome to the site. I'll have to keep my eye out for the Oldsmobiles there in the Hills. Funny thing, they [Bloomfield Hills] wouldn't even recognize the Cruise until recently. I grew up at 18 and Woodward, my old man ran the Mobil service station from '66-'86. They supposibly extended the Cruise all the way to the riverfront this year, maybe it will free things up a little.

Thanks Dave, I have been in contact with the MCR and have my spot reserved. I am looking forward to hanging out with you all and meeting some new Olds folks. I am going to plan on getting out of IL early Fri morning with my dad, (lay over) then get up there early Friday and do some cruising.
Hope to see you there!
Kevin

The Cruise was awesome, couldn't ask for nicer weather. Glad to see Harv and Judy, the car looked real sharp. Good seeing Dave also, cool you guys made it up to the "poor side of town" :D. Drove by the MCR location, looked like alot of nice Oldsmobile there. The number of classic cars, hot rods etc. on Woodward is unbelievable.

WOW.... What a day
The cruise was awesome. The weather was as perfect as you could ask for, the cars were great and we saw a ton of them.
We were lucky enough to be able to participate in the GM 100 parade first, so it was an early morning (at the Rencen by 6AM - zzzzzzzzz). Cruised up Woodward with 100+ GM cars from the last 100 years also with police, news crew, etc... It was great fun. Made our way to Birmingham where we parked for a few hours and then made our way up Woodward to the Motor City Rockets site where we spent the rest of the day. The Cutlass looked and ran GREAT.
Nice to meet you Kevin, glad you made the trip out from MN. Nice to see Olds folks from around the US.
I have not heard official statistics, but > 40,000 cars and close to 2 million people were expected. I wonder how close it got?
Hope you all enjoyed the Cruise. Already looking forward to next year.

Thanks Dave, it was nice meeting you and Jeff and some others from MCR. It was the best weather was fantastic. Now that I know how all this works, I would do a bit more cruising in the morning. This was so much fun, I will be back again.
Other than 1 mishap, my 71 made the cruise from MN to MI with out any problems. The old 71 had the longest drive it ever saw in its entire life. Woodward is something to behold.
Thanks again to the MCR club for the parking spot. LOVED IT!

Sorry, I missed you. I was back at the hotel most likely fast asleep. I had my gold 71 Cutlass Supreme. It was just down from the lobby facing the Applebees side.
I am going to have to get some numbers next time and get with you guys. I saw a couple of you cruising and Dave Tucker said you were up in Pontiac.
I will be back again.

Just in case you come back--I used to live in hazel park and you need not fear for your safety, but I would NOT recommend staying in that hotel they've got. It's the slum of the city.
