View Full Version : Extreme Garage Makeover?

I picked up an Oldsmobile sign from a dealership and brought it home in my Montana. The dang thing is 14 feet long!! So now what do I do with it?

I stared at my garage and wondered what to do. Then it hit me. A complete garage make over. I sold the 'Vette so I have the room for now (I bought an Intrigue). The vette was fun and some people may have thought I was crazy, but who am I kidding? I'm an Olds man...always was, always will be.

So, the makeover begins. Every poster, girl calander, muscle car centrefold, came off the walls. Now, what colour should I paint it? After a while I came to my decision.

I took my 442 paint chip to the hardware store and they colour matched the paint. I picked up some silver spray paint from Canadian Tire for contrast (and it matches the car). I traced out the 442 decal that I bought waiting for my paint job and cut a template out of cardboard.

One thing lead to another. Anyway, here is what it looked liked like to start and the project in progress. I figure that I'll be finished by the weekend. I'll update this thread with photo's on my progress.

What to do?

Don't even have a real workbench!

Too late to turn back now... put up florescent lights for the sign

I know I am looking forward to seeing the progress. I have always wanted to do the stripe and number design from my car on a wall somewhere, my problem is I never stay in one place long enough to do it.

Post lots of 'in progress' pictures for the rest of to enjoy all your hard work.

Ken-

Wonder if you hang that great sign and light it from behind, illuminate it if you choose, then have the spots on it?
Looks great.!
Clean up the rafters- dont want anything to fall on the 442 when she comes home with new paint!!!

Ok, been working really hard. Brad I have those posters (picked them up in Seattle). Pete , I was going to put a ceiling in,(like the neighbour) but that's too much work and more money.

Moving along with a long way to go

After some work I got the sign on the wall and backlit it. Also have half the garage cleaned up. The blue and silver are in place and my template "442" seemed to work.

Ken,

Looks great! A 14ft sign doesnt sound that big until you see it on a wall. That thing is HUGE!!

Very cool!

Looks great Ken! The sign is cool, I put one of those big round "Oldsmobile Service" signs up in the front of mine :D. Nice work on the paint job, layout. What did you do to prep the floor for paint? I noticed you had some old oil spots on there. I'd like to paint mine, but the previous owner's son had an old wrecker parked in there for years that leaked badly, don't know if I'd ever get anything to stick.

I looked at a few options for the floor. One was a formula that became harder than the concrete and looked pretty good....$3100. Another was a floor that had checkerboard that was made to showcase cars...$2500. Since the garage I'm doing is costing a grand total of $1500 I went to the hardware store (where they matched the 442 colour) and bought "Heavy-duty Garage Floor Paint".

To prep, I vacuumed the floor and painted. I was too lazy to start scrubing. My neighbour was surprized that it went on so well. $25 for the gallon, I chose charcoal as the colour. There was a choice of about 30 shades and colours.

Here is the other side cleaned out and getting ready for paint.

Damn Ken, you need to go into the garage makeover business .

Ha ha. My problem is once I start something I have to get it done. We renovated the top floor of our house a few years ago....in 32 days. I started the garage on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 pm May 25th.. I'm finished now, (except for a few pictures and trophies to put up. The garage itself is done.

new concept (at least to me) on hanging things off the wall (note the basket). May change this up a bit.

Well it's done. Whether it's extreme or not is beside the point. It is a change from what it was. So here are the final (as soon as I find a place for about 7 more trophies) shots.

Ken...

What a fun job you must have had. Yess... lots of work, but look at it.. KICKS ASS for sure!!
Love that you chose to backlight the sign.. it wouldnt have looked as nice with out it.
The colour option with stripe.. A+
Finally... the answer to the tires... right there on the 442.. Great choice.
Go grab a few corners at speed and tell me they dont handle and I'll give you that spoiler I have yet to use!!!! LOL
Take care

I don't mean to be NEGATIVE or anything but doesn't the engine that has leaks need attention ? I mean you garage looks clean now and you still have to put that piece of cardboard under it ! I spent lots of time on my engine to make sure it doesn't leak a drop of anything. I take pride in that fact that I can park anywhere and not have drops dripping from my car. That being said pay some attention to that engine and get those leaks fixed or the OLDS police will come and take her away for abuse and neglect. ALL IN FUN dude so don't get upset.

Actually, the car sits all winter and so far is not registered for the road. The seals will dry and the engine will drop one or two drops. That's it, one or two. I checked the cardboard since I put it under the car (since the makeover) and there were no signs of a leak. I don't want t to take the chance though.

The first picture is the left over of a previous owners car, not the Olds. When I drive the car I can park anywhere without worry of a leak. Went to a car show in a mall last year. People had drip tray under their cars, I did not. When I pulled away, not a drop[. The Olds police won't get me!:D

Pete, when the tear down started I thought the back lit sign would look pretty good. I wasn't sure about the colour, and thought to go white with blue and silver stripes. But hey, it's a garage afterall. So I went for it. I'm glad I did.

Regarding the tires, I decided to go with Firestone because everything I found on the internet had them rated over Goodyear and BFG. Who knows which one will be on top next year? Anyway there were in the size I wanted (225/70R 15) and I talked the guy down (something I learned from many travels overseas). It was only $20/tire but that's $80 in my pocket!

They are a nice quiet tire and I'll get to test them out in September when our club drives through the Rockies to an 800+ car show.

What a cool thread. I must have been busy last June and missed it. I'm planning to do a makeover on my garage next year but I couldn't even dream up anything that cool. Now I have some inspiration to .....dream higher.
